Murwillumbah Sporting Car Club’s Robert Learmonth was recognised for his contribution to grassroots motorsport with the 2021 Motorsport Australia NSW Service Award.

The award celebrates individuals who go above and beyond in their service to motorsport, particularly through their involvement with local clubs.

At the time of the award report in February 2022, Rob was MSCC’s General and Competition Secretary. He had helped establish the club around three years earlier, bringing together people who shared a commitment to local motorsport and developing young drivers in the Tweed Shire.

Working with Motorsport Australia, formerly CAMS, the club was also aiming to build a group of qualified officials to support local and regional events.

Rob’s involvement in motorsport began in the early 1980s and has included roles as a driver, club official and enthusiastic supporter of the sport.

His early competition experience included Alfa Romeos with the NSW Alfa Romeo Owners Club. He later competed in Datsun 240Z and 260Z models through Z Car Club Queensland, taking part in events locally and at Mount Panorama.

By the time of the report, Rob was competing in a 1999 Subaru WRX. His work as a scrutineer also included events such as the Bathurst 12 Hour, Bathurst 6 Hour, Challenge Bathurst and meetings at Morgan Park.

Reflecting on the award, Rob credited the dedication of the club’s executive and volunteers, describing the recognition as a team achievement.

At that stage, MSCC had grown to more than 40 members and attracted support from local business sponsors. More than $30,000 in state, federal and local grants had also helped support the club’s development, particularly its Young Driver Program.

The program was among the club’s key achievements, receiving support from the Murwillumbah community, government and local secondary schools. Club volunteers and secondary school teaching staff helped deliver its activities.

Rob also acknowledged the contribution of neighbouring clubs. Gold Coast Tweed Motorsport Club and Z Car Club Queensland assisted with staging events, while Tweed Valley Vehicle Restorers Club and Mount Warning Historic Auto Club supported activities including the Phil Bostock Memorial Fun Run and Show’n’Shine.

The award recognised Rob’s longstanding commitment to the sport and his contribution to building opportunities for local drivers, volunteers and officials.

MSCC congratulates Rob and thanks everyone whose time and effort has helped the club grow.
