Murwillumbah Sporting Car Club scheduled a free Young Driver Program garage morning at Spinners Automotive in Murwillumbah for 2 June 2024, helping learner and provisional drivers build their understanding of vehicle safety and basic maintenance.
The session was planned for 9am to 11am at 36 Durrington Street, with activities covering the practical checks and preparation involved in maintaining and operating a roadworthy vehicle.
Topics included tyres and tyre pressures, oil and water checks, brakes, electrical systems, suspension, body condition and servicing. Driving preparation was also part of the planned program, including seating position, mirrors and vehicle controls.
Registration requirements, truck awareness and a brief slalom driving course were among the other activities listed for the morning.
The garage session formed part of MSCC’s broader Young Driver Program, which aimed to build on the skills gained when obtaining a NSW or Queensland driving licence through practical in-vehicle exercises.
The program also encouraged an understanding of basic mechanical skills and responsible vehicle use, providing a supportive training environment where participants could develop their confidence and respect for other road users.
Khanacross activities offered another avenue for participants to develop their vehicle-handling skills. Those interested in progressing further could explore track-based tuition with MSCC and Motorsport Australia qualified drivers and instructors.
The garage morning’s listed supervising team included program coordinator Rob Learmonth, Peter Clarke from Spinners Automotive and Scott McDermott. There was no charge for the garage event, and signed permission from a parent or guardian was required for all participants.
MSCC acknowledged Southern Cross Credit Union and Spinners Automotive for supporting the Young Driver Program and helping provide learning opportunities for local young drivers.
